Works on Paper - College Street Gallery - November 2003

I hope to evoke the intensity of life, emotions ranging from utter joy to gruesome survival. The paintings I have been making over the past five years integrate movement in terms of description and action; the body in movement as well as the motions and energies of my body painting. The goal is to avoid any kind of illustrative description but to evoke the sense of how it feels to move-to dance, to paint, to be intimate. Drawing is stated and revoked in erasures and multiple viewpoints that complicate the visual experience. The figure is not always obvious, as glimpses of shoulder, knee or arm may only be initially visible in the splashy, gestural and colorful paintings.

The works on paper are part of this investigation. Working with paper is freeing because of the immediacy of the media involved. The works are generally made with ink, watercolor and acrylic paint, with the occasional pastel or oil paint on gessoed paper.
