Cynnie Gaasch Artist Statement

Open Symmetry

Searching for balance, I am exploring symmetry.   In the making of a painting there is always a sense of wholeness when the painting is complete that is be described as balance.   But... what if the making begins with something that is inherently balanced, a symmetrical form?   What if the entire pursuit is to find a way to be free from distraction, able to explore the most beautiful, the most perfect of forms?   Like a human body, animals, trees and flowers these paintings are not perfectly symmetrical, but balance is necessary for them to survive, to not topple over from their own weight, for their ecosystem to survive.   Each creation is open to chance, to the scars of life and individuality.   The way that a any living form adapts to these imperfections is what makes them strong and most beautiful.
